Every year, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation in Canada awards 16 fellowships, each worth 70,000 CAD, to doctoral students who demonstrate strong leadership potential and a commitment to society.

This three-year program is designed to develop engaged leaders by equipping exceptional PhD candidates with the skills needed to transform their ideas into action and help address the most pressing issues in Canada and around the world.

Amount of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Fellowship

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation offers 16 fellowships of 50,000 CAD each, plus an annual allowance of 20,000 CAD to cover research-related travel expenses and other costs, totaling 70,000 CAD per year.

The Foundation strives to ensure that its scholars reflect diversity in terms of gender, race, language, and socioeconomic background, as well as a plurality of perspectives and disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau fellowships, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

You must already be accepted or enrolled in the first, second, or third year of a full-time PhD program.
Your doctoral work must be related to one of the Foundation’s four central themes:
- Human Rights and Human Dignity;
- Responsible Citizenship;
- Canada and the World;
- People and their Natural Environment.
You must be a Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution, or a non-Canadian (permanent resident or foreign national) accepted or enrolled in a PhD program at a Canadian institution.
