Applications for the  Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program Journalism (Master in Journalism, Media and Globalisation) scholarships are open for the 2026/2027 academic year.

Offered by a consortium of universities in Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic, the Mundus Journalism program trains journalists to analyse global issues in news, media, and democracy. This is a two-year master’s (120 ECTS) with mandatory mobility in at least two European countries.

On average, the consortium awards 10 to 15 Erasmus Mundus scholarships per cohort. These scholarships include full tuition remission and a monthly stipend of up to €1,400 for 24 months. Applications for the 2026–2028 intake are open from 1 November 2025 to 10 January 2026 (23:59 CET).

About the Mundus Journalism Program

The Mundus Journalism Master’s is a two-year (120 ECTS) European joint program focused on international journalism, media analysis, and the globalisation of news.

Mobility Structure

All students begin Year 1 in Denmark, at Aarhus University and the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX), where they build an analytical foundation:

  • understanding political, economic, and technological transformations affecting journalism,
  • developing a critical perspective on the media’s role in global society,
  • and learning to connect theory with newsroom practice.

In Year 2, each student moves to another consortium university in Europe to pursue a thematic specialisation. Options include:

  1. “Politics & Communication” in Amsterdam,
  2. “Authoritarianism & Transition” in Prague,
  3. “Crisis & Conflict” in London,
  4. and “Cultures & Contexts” in Munich.

Consortium Partners

The Mundus Journalism program is coordinated by Aarhus University (Denmark) and brings together leading European universities that award the degree and host the second-year specialisations:

  • Aarhus University & Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) – Denmark: common first-year curriculum, theoretical and practical training in international journalism.
  • University of Amsterdam – Netherlands: “Politics & Communication” specialisation.
  • Charles University (Prague) – Czech Republic: “Authoritarianism & Transition” specialisation.
  • City, University of London (City St George’s) – United Kingdom: “Crisis & Conflict” specialisation.
  • Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) – Germany: “Cultures & Contexts” specialisation.

The consortium also draws on a wider network of international academic and professional partners (Berkeley, Fudan, etc.) for academic mentoring, internships, and career pathways.

Degrees Awarded

Students who complete all requirements earn a joint Master’s degree in Journalism, Media and Globalisation, awarded by Aarhus University and the second-year partner university. The degree certifies study in at least two European countries, an advanced thematic specialisation, and the ability to work internationally—in the newsroom and in strategic media analysis.

Scholarship Amounts

The Mundus Journalism program offers scholarships under Erasmus Mundus:

  • Full tuition waiver for both years of the master’s
  • Monthly stipend of approximately €1,400 for up to 24 months, to help cover living costs, visas, initial set-up, and part of inter-country travel.

The consortium announces 10 to 15 fully funded scholarships per cohort for 2026–2028, awarded to the strongest academic and journalistic profiles; competition is therefore very high.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the program and Erasmus Mundus scholarships, applicants must:

  1. Hold (or be in the final year of) a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in a relevant field (humanities, social sciences, journalism, communication, political science, etc.). Applicants still enrolled in a bachelor’s may apply but must provide proof of graduation no later than 1 August prior to the September start.
  2. Demonstrate a strong command of English: Academic IELTS around 7.0 (with minimum scores in each component), TOEFL iBT around 100, or Cambridge C2/C1 Advanced with a high score. Official proof is required unless you qualify for an exemption under consortium rules.
  3. Provide evidence of journalistic experience: a signed employer letter stating the period of employment, plus samples of work (articles, reports, audio/video pieces). The committee assesses editorial quality and professional engagement.
  4. Show excellent academic ability (above-average undergraduate record) and a clear motivation to address global challenges in journalism, media, and information.
