Applications for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) for the 2025/2026 academic year are now open.
The prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) is an initiative designed for students from all over the world who wish to pursue their doctoral studies at universities in Hong Kong. Created to attract the best global talent, this fellowship offers full financial support to deserving students.
HKPFS Program Overview
LEVEL: PhD.
DEADLINE: From September 1 to December 1, 2024.
FUNDING: $45,000 per year for three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.
ELIGIBLE COUNTRIES: All nationalities.
HKPFS Fellowship Amount and Benefits
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme provides an annual stipend of 337,200 HKD (approximately 43,230 USD) as well as a conference and research-related travel allowance of 14,000 HKD (approximately 1,790 USD) per year for each awardee, for a period of up to three years.
For awardees who require more than three years to complete their PhD, additional support may be provided by the chosen universities.
Number of Fellowships
For the 2025 cohort, the Hong Kong government will award 400 PhD fellowships.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the HKPFS, applicants must have an outstanding academic record, demonstrated research capabilities, and leadership skills. Additionally, candidates must have proficiency in English, as it is the primary language of instruction and research at Hong Kong universities.
There are no restrictions on nationality, research discipline, or prior work experience.
Application Procedure
Initial applications must be submitted online via the HKPFS electronic application system between September 1, 2024, and December 1, 2024, at 12:00 PM (Hong Kong time). After obtaining an HKPFS reference number, applicants must submit their full applications to participating universities before their respective deadlines, which are also set for December 1, 2024, at 11:59 PM (Hong Kong time).
