Applications for the prestigious Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) are now open. These scholarships are designed for talented international students and offer an exceptional opportunity to pursue a full-time Master’s program at one of the most renowned academic institutions in the Netherlands. The deadline to submit your application is October 1, 2024.
Leiden University, founded in 1575, is one of the oldest and most prestigious academic institutions in the Netherlands. It is home to approximately 34,744 students, including 7,682 international students. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, Leiden University ranks 141st globally and 5th nationally.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold a non-EEA passport.
- Have achieved outstanding academic results in their previous studies.
Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) Award Amount
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program offers three levels of financial support:
- €10,000 towards tuition fees.
- €15,000 towards tuition fees.
- Full tuition fee waiver.
Eligible Master’s Programs
All Master’s programs at Leiden University are eligible for the scholarship, except for:
- Non-advanced LLM and MSc programs at the Leiden Law School.
- Programs starting in February at the Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science, and Leiden Law School.

Application Process for Leiden University Scholarships
All applications for an eligible Master’s program will be considered for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarships. To apply for a Master’s program at Leiden University, click on this link.
After submitting your admission application, return to the application portal and click on “Scholarships”. If you are eligible, the LExS option will be visible. Submit a motivation letter (PDF, max. 500 words) explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
The faculty selection committees will nominate LExS recipients within six weeks of the application deadline.
