Applications for the Heinrich Böll scholarships are now being accepted. Each year, the Heinrich Böll Foundation awards scholarships to around 250 students pursuing Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in all disciplines and from all nationalities, who are studying at any German university. The Heinrich Böll scholarships are among the most prestigious programs for studying in Germany, alongside the DAAD program.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a political foundation affiliated with the German Green Party. It supports ecological and sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and gender equality. The foundation offers various programs, including scholarships for students, and is actively involved in political education and advocacy both in Germany and globally.
Heinrich Böll was a renowned German writer and novelist, one of the most important literary figures in post-war Germany. He was born on December 21, 1917, in Cologne, Germany, and passed away on July 16, 1985. Böll’s works often explore the effects of war and the moral challenges individuals face in society. Heinrich Böll was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972.
Eligibility Criteria
The selection criteria for the Heinrich Böll scholarship include:
- Excellent academic performance with no minimum GPA requirement.
- Significant societal engagement in favor of justice, democracy, and ecological sustainability.
- A strong interest in political issues and political education.
Applicants must demonstrate their ability to take on social responsibilities and contribute to community initiatives. The foundation evaluates each application holistically, taking into account the unique life paths of the candidates.
Scholarship Amount and Benefits
The amount of the Heinrich Böll scholarship varies depending on the level of study and the student’s nationality:
For Bachelor’s and Master’s students:
Students who studied in Germany and EU nationals (who did not study in Germany) can receive up to 713 USD per month plus 330 USD for books. This amount varies based on the beneficiary’s personal or parental income and assets.
Non-EU nationals (who did not study in Germany) will receive a monthly amount of 934 USD plus various individual allowances.
For Doctoral students:
Students educated in Germany and EU nationals (not educated in Germany) will receive 1,484 USD per month plus 110 USD monthly to cover research expenses.
Non-EU nationals (not educated in Germany) will receive a monthly amount of 1,319 USD plus 110 USD per month as a mobility allowance and various individual allowances.
Eligible Fields of Study and Universities
Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships are available for studies in all disciplines and at all higher education institutions in Germany, including universities, universities of applied sciences, and universities of the arts.
Application Process for Heinrich Böll Scholarships
The application process for the Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships consists of three stages:
- Stage 1: Online Application: To begin, create an account using this link. You will then receive a first confirmation email; click on the confirmation link. Subsequently, a second email containing a password will be sent to you. Finally, log in to your account, complete the application form, and upload the required documents.
- Stage 2: Discussion with Liaison Officers: University professors will conduct an interview with you. They will then write a report recommending or rejecting the candidate’s invitation to the third selection stage.
- Stage 3: Remote Interview with a Selection Committee: The interview will be conducted with three to four members of the selection committee, including one or two external members, a scholar, and a representative of the foundation.
Heinrich Böll Scholarship Application Deadlines
Applications for the Heinrich Böll Foundation scholarships are accepted in two sessions, with deadlines on September 1 and March 1 each year. For each session, the application portal opens six weeks before the deadline.
