Applications for the Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) Scholarships are now open. AAI is an international leadership program that aims to provide access to undergraduate (Bachelor’s) studies abroad for students who have lost one or both parents. The scholarships are fully funded and offer students the opportunity to study in the country of their choice. The deadline to apply is December 31, 2024.
Ashinaga is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the education and support of orphaned children or those who have lost one parent in Africa. Founded in Japan in 1963, Ashinaga has expanded its efforts to support orphans and students from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ashinaga Scholarship Benefits
Ashinaga scholarships offer the following benefits:
- A monthly stipend.
- University tuition fees.
- Accommodation fees.
- A flight/train ticket between the home country and the study country.
- Settling-in costs.
In addition, the initiative offers selected candidates comprehensive support and leadership training programs. These programs prepare them to actively engage in change-making efforts, driven by a deep sense of compassion.
The amount of the monthly stipend varies depending on the country of study. For example, for students who choose to study in France, the stipend is 400 euros per month.
Number of Scholarships
Ashinaga selects one student per eligible country.
Duration of the Scholarship
The maximum duration of the Ashinaga scholarship is 3 to 5 years, depending on the length of the program chosen by the candidate.
Countries of Study
The candidate’s study destination is selected in collaboration with the student during the Ashinaga Summer Camp, with the final decision resting with Ashinaga.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications for AAI 2025 are open to students who meet the following criteria:
- Are under 23 years old.
- Have lost their father, mother, or both.
- Have citizenship and have completed or will complete their secondary education in a Sub-Saharan African country.
- Have consistently ranked among the top students in their class during high school and university, if applicable.
- Have achieved a score higher than 14/20 on the Baccalaureate.
- Are committed to returning to their home country or Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Have no dependents.
- Are in good health and able to study abroad.
Application
To apply for the Ashinaga Initiative scholarships, complete this form for francophone candidates or this form for Lusophone candidates and upload the required documents in PDF or JPEG format. The application deadline is December 31, 2024.
Applications for AAI are only online. There are no application fees, and you should not pay anyone to register or apply on your behalf.

- Identification card, passport, or birth certificate/extract
- Most recent school report/grade transcript from your final year of high school
- Certificate of success for the Baccalaureate
- Recommendation letter from a teacher
- Death or disappearance certificate of parent(s)
- School reports for the last 3 years of high school
